Don’t you hate it when…….

Filed under: Just for Fun — Jessie on February 13, 2008 @ 11:20 pm

Here’s some gripes (and possible solutions) for situations that can really get your goat on the hill.

  • Snow down the pants (hey, you can always invest in a one piece, I love mine!)
  • Weak bloody mary’s (go to another bar or bring a flask!)
  • Crowded runs at 3:45 (either get out of there early or find a better run!)
  • Long lift lines (again get there early or find a run less traveled!)
  • Riders/skiers that stop in the middle of the trail (I’m rude, I’ll tell them to move to side as I plow them!)
  • Riders/skiers that take up the whole run doing turns (Again, I’m rude and will yell out that I’m on their right/left!)
  • Classic rock at the lodge (talk to that hottie at the bar!)
  • Sore after a day of riding (you know the answer to this…Hottub!!!)
  • Your toes hurt and they are cold (time to invest in new boots!)
  • Getting stuck on the flats (wax that stick and bomb that run!)
  • Foggy goggles (hate to say it but a little spit goes a long way!)
  • Not alternating on the lift line (call them out!)

If you have any Don’t you hate it when’s…… post them up! I’d love to hear them!

Represent out there sexy’s and know the code for god sakes!

Hotties on the Hill

Filed under: Hotties on the Hill — Jessie on @ 10:48 pm

E and I headed up to Mammoth this past weekend. While we were drinking away our $20 we saved on an afternoon lift ticket, we noticed some hotties at Canyon lodge.

Meet Kevin. He is 29 and from Carlsbad, CA. He works for Burton, doing web design, and got all his gear for free (lucky bastard!) He’s been riding about a year and was rocking all Burton gear (of course!) He rides regular on a Custom Burton board.

Hotties on the Hill from Mammoth - Megan & Katie

Filed under: Hotties on the Hill, Mammoth Snowboarding — Erica on February 12, 2008 @ 10:36 pm

Continuing our new search for both female AND male hotties on the hill, we bring you Megan and Katie! We met them on Saturday morning at Mammoth in the Canyon Lodge outdoor bar enjoying noontime beers.

Megan is 24, Katie is 25. Both are from Laguna and consider Mammoth their home mountain. Megan was skiing that day, but had boarded in the past and went back to skiing. Katie has been riding 11 years and is regular foot. Both were on K2 gear.

Megan caught our eye because she was rockin’ this 686 Gaper onesie suit that was totally taking the piss out of those 80s one-piece suits. She was even wearing the fanny pack that came with the outfit… oh, the irony!

The back of it said “Totally Radical!” Love the sass of the outfit, and Megan rocked it big time. Fun girls and most definitely some Hotties on the Hill!

Sara was just a bundle of energy, we met her on Sunday at the Steeps Bar at McCoy Station. Super cool chick, so friendly and fun to talk to!

I immediately recognized the Burton Warhol jacket she was wearing and complimented her on her excellent choice. She is from Studio City, CA and has been riding since ‘99. She was riding a Gnu board and Burton Stiletto bindings. Her home mountain is Mammoth but she loves Lake Tahoe.

Scope out her rad style below and be sure to rate this Hottie!

Recap of Mammoth trip, 2/9-2/10

Filed under: Photos of Snowboarding Trips, Mammoth Snowboarding, Uncategorized — Erica on February 11, 2008 @ 10:44 pm

This past weekend, Jessie and I were in Mammoth again. We drove up EARLY Saturday morning, mostly at my insistence. In spite of a rough start to the weekend, we ended up having a blast!

We left my house in Los Angeles at 5:30am and made it to our condo by about 10:45. By the time we unloaded the car, changed into our gear, and walked up to Canyon Lodge, it was almost 11:45. So we decided to wait the extra hour-ish, and save $20 by doing the afternoon pass.

Well, we found a way to spend that $20 we each saved… “let’s pass the time by drinking some bloodies & beers!” We were at the Canyon outside bar till about 1:30 when we finally motivated to the mountain… but not until after we met some new Hotties on the Hill (more on them later!)

Chair 5 in Mammoth snowboarding conditions

The snow conditions were great - it was about 40 on the mountain and beautiful blue skies on both Saturday and Sunday. It got a little mushy/sticky near the end of the day on Saturday, but we were determined to stay on the hill til the lifts closed, considering we got out so late that day.

It was definitely best at the top, where it stayed coldest - the snow was nicer up there but by the late hour we got up there it was pretty chopped up and mogul-ey. But even on top, on Saturday it was 20 degrees with only 10 MPH winds… a far cry from a few weeks ago when it was gusting as high as 75 MPH!

Saturday night we made it a mellow one… we did apres ski at the Austria House (not the greatest… decent beers but the food selection was crap… we missed Whiskey Creek!) We barely had any time to nap after returning to the condo, doing the jacuzzi, and then cleaning up and heading out to eat. We had dinner at Angels BBQ with the rest of the gang from the condo, and then went out for a beer at the Auld Dubliner. We were sleeping by 11:30 that night! It felt great after 4 hrs of sleep the night before due to our early drive.

The group from our condo

Sunday was another bright, beautiful day - thankfully, today we were on the hill by 9am and enjoying the freshly groomed, uncrowded runs. I guess everyone kinda leaves Mammoth early morning for the long drive home, so Sundays stay pretty mellow. Great for us! Luckily, today we went straight to the top, and enjoyed the most amazing snow on Cornice & Scotty’s Run. Once again it was about40 on the hill, and very little wind, with bright sunlight (perfect conditions.)

Cornice Bowl at Mammoth Mountain

Midway through the morning, we met up with Chad, Bob, and Wade from the condo and got to do a few runs with them before they had to leave.

the Mammoth Condo 5 at the top of Climax for snowboarding

It’s always so fun to ride with guys, they make us step it up and ride that much harder just to keep up with them! We did a few runs from Cornice and Climax down Lower Dry Creek… I had my most spectacular wipeout of the day with them. Let’s just call it an “on the mountain 720″ - I did 3 full somersault rotations coming down Climax and hitting a mogul wrong ;-)

The guys had to leave at noon; Jess and I headed up Chair 23 and took Road Runner down to Chair 14.  We did a few runs on the backside but agreed that top was better so we headed back up there for a few more Scotty’s and Cornice runs.  The  snow stayed pretty good through the day - we were on the hill until 2:15 then we decided to come down, get changed, and hit the road for our long drive. We both agreed that today (Sunday) was the best day of the season so far! All in all in spite of a rough start to the weekend (the 4:30am alarm clock on Saturday), we had a GREAT time and thanks to Dave for inviting us. Great people, great snow, and all in all great fun! Can’t wait for the next one.

Oh, I almost forgot! We even got to see WOOLLY, the Mammoth Mountain mascot, skiing down to Canyon Lodge as we took the chair up. We love Woolly! Seeing him is always a silly fun highlight of any Mammoth snowboarding trip. We’ll see you again soon Woolly!

Snow Reports now available on Microsoft Live Search

Filed under: Snow Report — Erica on @ 10:57 am

If you can’t remember the Web site address of your local mountain, or you just want a quick rundown of the conditions where you are headed for snowboarding, check out the MSN Live Search snow report listing for resorts in the US or Canada.

from their blog: “With the winter in full swing, we’re excited to announce snow reports for skiers and snowboarders! Search for any ski resort in the United States or Canada to get conditions before you head to the mountain. Links to the resort’s site and a link to a map are also shown.”

You can search by specific resort (type in “mammoth mountain”) and get details for that mountain, or for the conditions in a given area (such as “colorado snow report”) to get a quick breakdown of the 4 mountains in that area that received the most recent snow.

Pretty cool and handy! Check it out for yourself at http://search.live.com

I met Vaughan in Colorado 2 years ago. We rode in Vail and partied at this place that had a bouncing dancefloor. We also rode in Breckenridge and lucked out with a some spring pow!

He came to visit Cali last year and I showed him the sights including San Diego and of course Mammoth.

Vaughan has been riding for 6 years, rides regular, and does a toeside front 3’s with his eyes closed. He loves his RIDE DH DFC board and is really really hot! Look for this hottie on the hill in Park City!

Snowboarding Trips - 3 Tips for Preparing for High Altitude

Filed under: Snowboarding Tips, Mountain Prep — Erica on February 5, 2008 @ 11:09 pm

Mammoth Mountain courtesy of WikipediaDid you know the base elevation of Mammoth Mountain is around 8000 feet, and the summit is just over 11,000 feet? To those of us who don’t live in the mountains, particularly us Southern California folks, the summit is over 2 miles above sea level!

The altitude results in much “thinner” air - that is, it feels like it has a much lower oxygen percentage than the sea-level air we’re used to breathing, because of the reduced air pressure at altitude.

This means that the human body “feels like” higher volumes of air must be consumed to get the same amount of oxygen that the body needs.

The effects of altitude on the body can be felt immediately when you finally arrive at your condo - go ahead, run up that flight of stairs! See how fast you start breathing? And your heart, the way it races a mile a minute?

I definitely notice the effects of altitude on my body immediately upon finally emerging from our car trips to Mammoth. I have a racing heart, I breathe much shallower, and I have virtually no stamina.

While not much can be done to prevent the effects of high altitudes on snowboarding trips, there are a couple of things you can do to reduce some of the symptoms. Here are just a few ideas that should be helpful in your coping with altitude on your snowboarding trips.
Water Bottle

  1. Drink lots of water. I always knew it was really easy to get dehydrated up on the hill. But I always thought it was because I didn’t take enough water breaks during riding (damn lift lines at bottom are too long!) But apparently the body doesn’t conserve water as much at higher altitudes due to a decrease in the hormone that regulates the body’s water retention. So what does this mean? Drink up! Drink as much as you can stand… when you get to your condo start pounding the agua! And try to drink at least two+ bottles over the course of your day on the hill. Stay hydrated!
  2. Don’t exert yourself unnecessarily. As with the stair-climbing example above, the result of the higher altitude and “thinner” air makes you breathe much harder and your heart beat much faster. So take it easy… no running up the stairs or working out or rough sex. (If you can help it.) Especially that first night - relax and let your body slowly start acclimatizing.Bottle of wine
  3. Be wary of drinking alcohol! I don’t know why, and am too lazy to look it up right now, but basically, for me and my friends, one drink on the mountain equals the effects of roughly THREE drinks at sea level - probably something to do with the way the body processes things differently at lower air pressure! Keep this in mind when you hit the bars! You will get wasted if you’re not careful.
  4. Optional: bring sleeping pills or anti-anxiety meds. You know what? I really do believe in “Better Living Through Chemistry” when appropriate. I don’t take many prescription drugs, but when I need to, like if my heart is racing 120+ beats per minute due to working harder at altitude, I’ve found that Xanax is one of those magic mama’s little helpers that makes it possible to sleep. The altitude causes the heart to pump really really fast, because of the “thinness” and “oxygen-less” feeling air. So a nice sleeping pill or muscle relaxant or a Xanax finally allows me to relax a little. (NOTE: I am obviously not a medical doctor and do not know the ramifications of taking these drugs in altitude but I know they help me sleep so take it for what it’s worth. Please consult your own doctor for their advice here!)

By the end of the 2nd day you should start to feel slightly better - less racing heart, more regular breathing. But by then it’s almost time to go home… and be ready for the next trip where you’ll start all over again. Be prepared for the altitude, it’s nothing to mess with!

Note: some people are affected by serious altitude sickness symptoms even at 8000 feet or less. Read more about altitude sickness at Wikipedia.

Hottie on the Hill from Mt Baldy - Morgan

Filed under: Mt. Baldy, Hotties on the Hill, Photos of Snowboarding Trips — Erica on February 1, 2008 @ 8:41 pm

Introducing our first female Hottie on the Hill - Morgan! It’s high time we also showcase some of the hot female snowboarders we encounter! (And some of my guy friends have been asking about that too.) ;-)

Morgan Snowboard-Women Hottie on the Hill

(Leila and Morgan)

We met Morgan in the “lodge” at Baldy (more like a cafeteria, blech) near the end of the day. Morgan has not been riding in a while, this day was her first outing in two years, but she’s a trouper and made it through… and is ready for more!

She was a super cool, down to earth, fellow snowboarding woman, and luckily lives here in LA, so we will definitely be taking more snowboard trips with her in the near future… plus I’m going to add her to our Hotties on the Hill Recruiting Team. We can never have too many eyes for that job!
